With so many different varieties of roofs to choose from, asphalt shingles remain the number one choice among homeowners and contractors around the world. Why is that? Not only are they less costly than wood, tile, metal, and slate, they are readily available and come in a variety of styles and colors to match any kind of home. Their guaranteed life span also makes them tough competition to beat. If you’re interested in learning more about asphalt shingles and whether or not they are right for your South Florida home, keep on reading!
Fiberglass vs. Organic
Asphalt shingles are available in two varieties: fiberglass and organic. Fiberglass shingles have a base mat made of woven fiberglass, while organic mat-based shingles start with a base of recycled felt paper. Both are then saturated with asphalt for waterproofing, and finally coated with adhesive asphalt that’s embedded with ceramic granules. Because of the fact that they consist of 40% more asphalt than fiberglass, organic mat-based shingles are heftier in weight as well as cost. Even though they’re labeled as “organic,” the additional asphalt content makes them less environmentally friendly.
Three Tab vs. Architectural
Asphalt shingles are manufactured in two different types: Three-tab and Architectural. Three-tab shingles are distinguished by – you guessed it! — tabs. These tabs are the cutouts that run along the lower long edge of the shingle. The three comes from the fact that even though they’re one whole piece, they look like three individual shingles. Three-tab shingles have been around a long time and are still the most popular as well as economical shingle today. Architectural asphalt shingles do not have cutouts, but their lower portion contains an additional laminated asphalt layer. This creates the high definition, ultra dimensional look that gives them their name.
Gomez General Contracting Inc. proudly provides the highest quality asphalt shingles available on today’s market. With brands such as CertainTeed, GAF, Owens Corning and Tamko, you really can’t go wrong. When choosing asphalt shingles, CertainTeed is the leading brand in the market followed closely behind by GAF, as well as Tamko and Owens Corning. All have noteworthy features, comparable pricing and technologically advanced manufacturing processes making them highly desirable for homeowners as well as roofing contractors.
There are many great benefits to having an asphalt shingle roof installed on your South Florida home. Not only will a new asphalt shingle roof increase the value of your home, it will protect your investment for many years to come. Read on to learn the top three reasons why we stand behind these leading brands and their high quality product lines.
- Asphalt shingle brands offer complete roofing systems.
In order to optimize the performance of your new roof, it’s important that the mechanical components such as the condensing unit, indoor coil, gas furnace and the thermostat control are designed to work together. Because of this, many asphalt shingle companies, including Big G Roofing & More Inc., offer complete roofing systems that include the whole kit and caboodle. With our expert craftsmanship, our installers will be able to improve your roofing system and really take it to the next level of protection and efficiency.
- Asphalt shingles show excellent durability.
Asphalt shingles are built in multiple fused layers and when installed, provide three to five layers of protection for your roof. GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning and Tamko all offer lines of impact resistant shingles that are Class 4 rated. This means that a 1.25” steel ball dropped twice onto the same spot of the shingle from 12 feet will not damage it. This is a great feature for areas like Miami that are prone to intense storms. Also, many brands offer lines of dimensional and architectural shingles that can withstand high winds. Three-tab roofs, which offer two to three layers of protection, can withstand winds up to 60 miles per hour. Four to 5-tab roofs can offer protection from wind gusts of 110 to 130 miles per hour.
- Asphalt shingles come with some of the best warranties.
GAF offers four different warranties including the Lifetime Roofing System Limited Warranty for shingles and accessories, the System Plus Limited Warranty, the Silver Pledge, and the Golden Pledge Limited Warranty. These warranties range from 5 to 50 years of protection and cover things such as manufacturing defects, wind damage, and algae discoloration.
CertainTeed offers a Lifetime Warranty on many of their products; however, the warranty is not transferrable to new homeowners. Besides the lifetime warranty, CertainTeed offers a “SureStart” warranty, a wind warranty of up to 110 miles per hour, as well as an algae resistant warranty. This can be super handy for homes in the South Florida area.
Tamko offers some pretty straightforward warranties including a 25 year, 30 year, and 50 year warranty covering 60-130 mile per hour winds and algae cleanings.
Owens Corning offers five different warranty options including their Standard warranty, Total Protection Roofing System, the System Protection, Preferred Protection, and Platinum Protection. All Owens Corning warranties are transferrable once during the lifetime of the warranty.
